THREE REASONS FOR BUILDING ASSETS

BASED ON EXTENSIVE RESEARCH IN OVER 213 COMMUNITIES AND 100,000 YOUNG PEOPLE IN 6th THROUGH THE 12TH GRADE

1.  THE ASSETS ARE POWERFUL. They give young people the strengths they need to make positive choices, even in the face of stress and pressure. The more assets young people have the less likely they are to engage in high risk behaviors:

                                        1-10         11-20        21-30         31-40

Problem Use of Alcohol:     53%        30%             11%            3%
Sexual Activity                 33%        21%             10%            3%

When they have more assets young people are also more likely to engage in positive behaviors:

                                        1-10         11-20        21-30         31-40

Succeeding In School:         7%         19%             35%           53%
Maintaining Good Health    25%        46%             69%           88%

2.  TOO MANY YOUNG PEOPLE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH ASSETS: Research has found that the average 6th to 12th grader surveyed experiences only 18 of the 40 assets. Furthermore, just 8% of young people have 31-40 assets.
